2018 Skoda Karoq the second Skoda SUV, now for the Czech brand to play in the ultra-competitive (and lucrative!) segment of the compact SUV, where it will confront successes such as the Nissan Qashqai, seat Ateca or Peugeot 3008. And in the future, the VW T-Roc will be manufactured in Palmela. It is called KAROQ and, although only arriving at our market during the first trimester of 2018, we were to meet him yesterday in a presentation of Stockholm (Sweden) to the world!
And the expression is not exaggerated because the Czech brand has gathered more than 400 journalists from 29 countries, namely China that is already the most important market for Skoda. And where the KAROQ will also be produced from November, four months after starting production in Europe (July).
But let’s start at the beginning. Karoq? What is this name? Skoda returned to Kodiaq Island, the one that is in southern Alaska and where he picked up the name for his large SUV that is arriving at the national market. For Karoq was born of the agglutination of two words of the dialect of the Alutiiq, the indigenous peoples of that island: “Kaa ‘ Raq” (car) and “Ruq” (arrow). And, revealing that it will still be arriving another SUV in its range, has already made known that the name will have the same provenance and similar graphics.

Let us focus, however, in the car that Skoda gave us yesterday, currently in the final touches before production, after four years of development and more than 2,500,000 kilometers of tests fulfilled! The KAROQ has an extremely compact air, with a line adopting the new language of ‘ design ‘ debuted by the Kodiaq, being difficult to resist the temptation to define it as a smaller Kodiaq. Built on the MQB platform of the VW Group, sharing the wheelbase (2.63 m) with the seat Ateca, being only 2 cm long, with 4.38 m.

In terms of motorisation, the attention will certainly be to the diesel versions, with the 1.6 TDI of 115 CV and the 2.0 TDI in two variants, of 150 and 190 CV. This latter will only be available with automatic 7-speed gearbox and integral traction. But the KAROQ also will have two of the most modern VW group gasoline propellants, the 1.0 tsi (tricylindrical Turbo) of 115 CV and the Recentíssimo 1.5 tsi of 150 CV. All versions have a choice between manual six-speed gearbox or, in option, the automatic seven.
The Skoda may have called attention to the equipment that the KAROQ will have, such as LED’s headlights, a selector of driving modes and all the array of electronic aids to driving, as parking attendants and track maintenance, the dead-angle obstacle detector, “cruise control” adaptive, emergency braking system with obstacle detection or traffic signal recognition system and pedestrians. But it gives particular emphasis to the connectivity capability of the new model that allows you to transform your interior into a “hotspot” for permanent Internet access – provided the driver has a SIM card – in addition to compatibility with the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink systems. Another novelty (option) is the digital instrument panel, well to the genre of Audi’s ‘ virtual cockpit ‘.
