2019 Kia e-Niro Specifications: Range, Charging Time, Technology

As is often the case, the Kia-Hyundai group is joining forces for the technical part of its cars. That explains why the Kia e-Niro is almost a clone of the electric Hyundai Kona. The modular platform of the 2019 Kia e-Niro has been calculated from the outset for full electrification and can accommodate two lithium-ion polymer batteries with water cooling (better for life). They are 39.2 and 64 kWh, and in the latter case, we can speak of a comfortable energy reserve because on the new WLTP homologation cycle it would reach a range of 455 kilometers. The 39.2 kWh version promises to be 289 kilometers away.

The power of the 2019 Kia e-Niro depends on the battery pack: the version of 39.2 kWh is driven by a synchronous electric motor with permanent magnets of 136 hp and 395 Nm, that of 64 kWh kicks it up to 204 hp. Its torque (395 Nm) is identical, but available over a wider speed range (up to 3,600 o / m instead of 2,400 o / m). The announced performance figures seem in any case sufficient in the context of their intended use (from 0 to 100 km / h in 9.8 seconds and 155 km / h for the 39.2 kWh and 7.8 seconds and 167 km / h for the 64 kWh), because the small battery version is mainly focused on urban use, while the 64 kWh more is meant for out-of-town and highway traffic.

Charging depends on the network, but also on the internal charger, which unfortunately can only charge one-phase here. This means that even on a three-phase charger with a power of 11 or 22 kW, it will never provide more than 7.2 kW of payload with alternating current (meaning the pack of 64 kWh needs 9 hours and 50 minutes to fully switch). to load). On the other hand, the 2019 Kia e-Niro is also compatible with DC fast chargers with capacities up to 100 kW. With that, he can recharge 60 percent of his battery in 42 minutes when you start with a 20 percent battery charge, Kia claims.

Performance

The only version available for test runs was the 64 kWh, which we must admit is that it brings together all the benefits of an electric car: a soothing operating silence and an immediate throttle response, which makes the driving experience both safer and more enjoyable. We could also taste his driving behavior in the sense that the compromise comfort-driving behavior is pleasant. Or yet as long as you do not address all kiloWatts at once, because then the train has a hard time transferring all the couple on the road. But apart from that, the balance is positive and the 2019 Kia e-Niro never gets bored at all. It even seems to take a head start on the hybrid versions, probably due to its architecture and its low implanted battery, which optimizes the weight distribution.

Kia has retained the two gearshift levers on the handlebar for the robotic gearbox of the traditional models, but assigns them a new function: you can adjust the regenerative power with delays. In concrete terms, three regeneration levels are available on top of the automatic mode, from very mild to as efficient as possible, which can be very useful in function of where you drive. You can also bring the car to a complete stop purely on the power of regeneration by holding the left lever. Practically, though he does not always react quickly to the levers.

The consumption of the 2019 Kia e-Niro did not disappoint us either. The WLTP standards do not lie: in the official documents there is an average consumption of 15.3 kWh / 100 km for the version of 64 kWh and that result we equaled ourselves on a route of 60 km that consisted of highways with a speed limit of 110 km / h, a large conurbation and also a few small backcountries that went uphill and downhill. A brief calculation shows that under normal use a real driving range of 400 kilometers is effectively achieved. And then it really gets interesting.

The electric Niro is interesting. Yes, $45.582 is still a lot of money for the man in the street, but it is clearly the right direction. Finally, this car equals the driving range of a Tesla for not even half the price – in anticipation of the Model 3, but also the first versions on our market will cost at least $67.005. The 2019 Kia e-Niro is richly equipped, although you still have to pay $1.014 for navigation on the basic version. Too bad, because that system seems indispensable to find a charging station
