2019 Volvo XC40 D4 R-Design Dimensions
Stylish, relaxed and very comfortable, the 2019 Volvo XC40 D4 R-Design has the right arguments to be a serious case of popularity. This version, with a 2-liter engine and full wheel drive, is yet another limited edition
As someone who arrives at an event shortly after the appointed time, for everyone to notice their entry, the Volvo XC40 arrived elegantly late to the party of premium compact SUVs. While competitors like the Audi Q3, the BMW X1 or the Mercedes GLA reinvent themselves to disguise the passage of the years, the Swedish SUV has in its favor the novelty factor. An attention that will have to deal with equally serious competitors like the BMW X2, which we tested in the Full Test, or the Jaguar E-Pace.
Elite opponents, oriented to a demanding clientele, accustomed to standards of quality above average and not tolerant of failures. Nothing that Volvo is not used to. As can be confirmed by the popularity of the XC60 and XC90 ranges. Applying this success formula to a lower segment is not always easy, but Volvo has once again surpassed itself. Instead of adapting an existing platform, such as the XC60 platform, the Swedish builder created a new architecture, called Compact Modular Architecture (CMA).
With no exotic materials, to keep costs under control, the 4.43 meters of 2019 Volvo XC40 D4 R-Design developed around a steel frame. The engine was mounted in a transverse position, allowing the wheelbase to be extended up to 2.70 m, a figure exceeded only by the 2.76 m of the BMW X1. In this case, the benefits to the habitability are direct, with Volvo to tie with the Mercedes GLA and to lose only to the BMW X1.
Volvo XC40 D4 R-Design Exterior Design & Features
With all-wheel drive, 21 cm high to the ground and short projections to improve TT angles, the XC40 does not get off the tarmac. However, just look at the sleek lines of the bodywork, softer than the XC60, to realize that the main obstacles that this SUV will face meet in the city. An environment where the contemporary style of the XC40 fits in perfectly and the compact dimensions ensure a reasonable agility.
The suspension, with McPherson strut at the front and multi-strut behind, four arms instead of the five of the XC60, disguises how the pavement can. The light steering does not tire and the 360 ° view, albeit somewhat dizzy due to camera angles, compensates for the reduced rear visibility in maneuvers in tight spaces. On the move, the mirrors well positioned in the doors make forget the exaggerated volume of the pillar C.
Contrary to what the upward waistline might suggest, the visibility of the rear seats is not very limited. With two comfortable seats and a stool in the middle, the rear seats fold the back in the 60:40 ratio, an operation that can be done from the suitcase. This has the indispensable electric opening, accessible cargo plane, straight lines, and flat bottom. The 460 liters available are at the bottom of the competition. Only the Mercedes GLA, with 421 l, has a smaller luggage compartment. Not being particularly large, the suitcase of the 2019 Volvo XC40 D4 R-Design is functional. The floor, which hides a room of generous dimensions, can be folded in half and used as a partition.
2019 Volvo XC40 D4 R-Design Interior
More than the expected dominance over traffic or multiple regulations, it is the feeling of space that most impresses who sits behind the wheel. This is powered by the orange carpets made from recycled plastic bottles. However, the seats are arrived at the center, with little space for the right leg and excess of freedom for the left.
True to the purity of Swedish design, the interior has a neat appearance. There are materials of different qualities, but always well assembled and intercalated in order to avoid coexistence between hard plastics. At least at the top of the dashboard. From the line of sight down, the panorama becomes poorer, harder and less pleasant to the touch. Looking good, we ended up finding some excessive slack. They focus mainly on the dashboard and around the silver strip that crosses it, joined the applications of the same material of both doors.
With two liter engine, 190 hp and all-wheel drive, the Volvo XC40 cost 53 495 €. This price corresponds to the level of Momemtum equipment, well stuffed and therefore more expensive than most. Only the BMW X2 xDrive190d of 190 hp (54,840 €) and the Mercedes GLA 220 d 4Matic of 177 hp (54 549 €) are more expensive. The panorama is reversed with the 39 957 € of access diesel, 150 hp D3 and front wheel drive. BMW and Mercedes get prices in the house of 37 thousand euros, but with 116 hp engines for the XD sDrive16d and 109 hp for the GLA 180 d. Starting with the R-design equipment level (€ 57,160) and adding an extensive list of options, the Volvo XC40 D4 R-Design of the images costs € 68,852.
2019 Volvo XC40 D4 R-Design, Specifications & Performance
Discreet and comfortable city, the XC40 D4 proves to be unexpectedly noisy in acceleration. Whenever the four-cylinder block needs to be answered, which only happens above 2500 rpm, the engine is forced into the passenger compartment. An excess of noise that disappears completely as the speed stabilizes. Five driving modes allow you to adjust the XC40 to the driver’s needs, even if they include brief off-road adventures.
Very convenience-oriented, the XC40 has the typical SUV balance. The bodywork adorns, but without excesses and with the least influence on the trajectories. The balance of reactions is amplified by the integral traction system, with a very easy to position front and a rear that is immune to unexpected movements.
With eight very close relationships, the manual mode of the automatic transmission can even be faster to reduce than many sports boxes. But this XC40 D4 is not a sporty one. You must spend the days between the house and the office. Therefore, it is better to save the € 873 that cost the steering wheel tabs and let the box work in Auto mode, which is where it shines.
In fact, the whole 2019 Volvo XC40 D4 R-Design seems to shine, such is the ease with which it catches the attention. It is the understated charm of Swedish design to work. Minimalist lines served with identical doses of functionality and quality. The rest, from stepping smooth to installments without great history, is in line with the segment average. It remains to wait for the version of front-wheel drive and 150 hp, certainly more attractive, both for price and consumption, which in this D4 engine with full wheel drive proved to be very sensitive to the slope of the terrain, with the weighted average not to fall from 8.2 l / 100 km.
