2020 BMW i8 Roadster; Plugin Hybrid Sport Car Overview
The 2020 BMW i8 Roadster Range is not completely different. On the contrary, you look at the coupe and you barely distinguish the difference. But next to it appears the big news: This Roadster, two-seater, electric canvas bonnet and lift doors. Obviously, it is in him that focus the attention, because for the first time it is possible to ride in a BMW i8 of hair in the wind, feeling especially striking in the electric mode and in the purest silence.
There is also an important renewal of the powertrain hybrid group of the i8, both in the Roadster and in the coupe. First, the 1.5-liter engine and three-cylinder gasoline are the same, but it receives particle filter, an important element of the defense of the lungs of those who breathe near a gasoline engine with direct injection.
Then there are changes, more important, in the electrical part, consisting of the synchronous motor mounted on the front axle and the lithium-ion battery assembled in the center, under the central console: this gained energy density, growing its capacity of the previous 7.1 kWh for the current 11.6 kwh.
This means that now the i8 can walk up to 53 km in pure electric mode (loading in the button eDrive). The coupe gets a little more, 55 miles because it’s 60 pounds lighter. There are also gains in performance because, thanks to this battery, the electric motor has won 12 horsepower, now making a maximum of 143 Horsepower. By joining the 231 horsepower of the gasoline engine, the 2020 BMW i8 Roadster debates a combined power of 374 Hp.
The performances are of sport: 4.4 seconds from Zero to CEM (4.6 in a convertible) and 250 km/h of maximum speed electronically limited.
2020 BMW i8 Roadster Plugin Hybrid; Range, performance
In a Plug-in hybrid car the contained consumptions are an important objective. In this respect, the new i8 now announces an average of 1.8 L/100 km in the coupe (counting the initial 55 km of zero consumption) or 2.0 liters to a hundred in the Roadster. And for those who buy an electrified expensive the recharge times are also important, as it is connecting it to the outlet that will save more gasoline, although it regains energy when braking. In a domestic outlet you need 5 and a half hours for a full recharge, but in a wall box of 3.6 kW, The thing takes less: 2 hours to 80% and three hours for full recharge.
The visual differences of the new coupe to the previous one boil down to the new optional 20-inch rims, a kilo lighter than the previous one, a new air inlet on the front hood and the caption “Coupe” applied to the C-pillar.
The Roadster obviously has the main peculiarity: a bonnet, which opens automatically in 15 seconds, even in progress up to 50 km/h and that has the advantage of being made of a textile material to bend better in harmonium behind the passenger compartment. This is why the Roadster loses the two small rear seats that the coupe preserves, instead of having some compartments behind the seats to store about 100 liters of volumes.
We walked a lot with the new Roadster on the winding roads of the island of Palma de Mallorca during the presentation and we give you more details in the next edition of Turbo Magazine, which will be on the newsstands around May 20. Not to lose.
