2020 Toyota GR Supra: Specs, Features, Made By Gazoo
At the Detroit Motor Show Toyota drives the 2020 Toyota GR Supra under the spotlight. The Japanese sports car is closely related to the BMW Z4.
We already knew that the 2020 Toyota GR Supra is the brother of the youngest BMW Z4. This is a real co-production, as the car industry knows more. But while the Germans once again chose the concept of a roadster, Toyota went for a coupé. Pardon: a sports car.
The looks are indeed quite extreme, with a mix of smooth lines and sharp corners. The large vents just in front of the rear wheels suggest that the engine is in the back, but that is not the case. They are there for the show and probably also for aerodynamics. A real rear spoiler is missing, but the car is equipped with many other wind deflectors and related tabs. As well as a double-bubble in the roof, it also provides extra downforce without having to give up headroom.
Base on BMW
At the launch, the 2020 Toyota GR Supra will only be offered with a 3-liter six-cylinder. No surprise, it is the six-in-line of a single twin-roll turbo that is also in the front of the BMW Z4 M40i. And just like with that Z4, the 3-liter power bore delivers a power of 340 hp at 5,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 500 Nm between 1,600 and 4,500 rpm.
A manual gearbox is not provided, the car is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission of ZF origin. The drive is of course done via the rear wheels, which are helped by the active M-differential that we know from the M2, M3, and M4. The Toyota GR Supra sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds, so that it shoots out of the starting blocks slightly faster than the Z4. the top speed is also electronically limited to 250 km/h.
The extremely short wheelbase – even shorter than the GT86! – and the broad track must ensure efficient road handling. When Toyota used the engine and transmission from BMW, the Japanese did make their mark on the chassis. They even caused the engine to come a little further back, to obtain an ideal 50/50 weight ratio over the axles.
Toyota also promises a low center of gravity and a rigid structure. At the front are MacPherson and at the back a multilink, the dampers are adaptive. The Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires are located around handsome 19-inch wheels, which are filled with Brembo brakes.
2020 Toyota GR Supra Interior
The Japanese looks more classic than the German inside, it all looks pretty tight and neatly finished. Not really sporty maybe, but user-friendly. And fortunately many real buttons, that’s how we like it. The 88.8-inch large screen can be operated with the fingers or with a rotary knob (thanks BMW).
Toyota also provides sporty seats that are both comfortable and guarantee sufficient lateral support on the track. There will be two trim levels: the already very luxurious Active (automatic air conditioning, electrical seats, infotainment with navigation, smart speed control with stop & go, LED lights …) and Premium, unique for the second include the leather seat upholstery, the JBL audio and a head-up display.

The 2020 Toyota GR Supra is no ordinary Toyota, so it does not roll in a normal factory of the tire. Well in Graz, where the BMW Z4 is put together. The sports car is the first production model that has been developed by Gazoo Racing and is now also being built by that department. The same people who last year finally gave Toyota a victory in Le Mans and from a slightly greater distance also keep an eye on Finland-run and successful rally activities.
Hence also 90 copies of a GR Supra A90 Edition, which comes with a matt gray carriage and a bright red interior and goes to the 90 first European customers of the car.
