2020 VW Polo GTI Review: Specs, Performance, Size, Fuel Economy

2020 VW Polo GTI Review – The Volkswagen Polo wants to rebel in the GTI family. The small multipurpose saloon goes for a two-liter and thus climbs to 200 hp. Does he have more than just a training suit with his DSG gearbox?

2020 VW Polo GTI MK5 Review & Pricing

As with the VW Golf GTI with 245 hp we can blame the Polo GTI for certain gentrification. He has, however, under the subtle sportswear, some seductive character traits. Starting with his ‘upsizing’. The eighteen hundreds made way for a 2.0 TSI. It is not a pinched Golf GTI block, but a four-cylinder Audi with a high compression ratio (11.65: 1). He uses a small turbocharger and variable valve timing. The block sends 200 hp (from 4400 rpm to 6000 rpm) and 320 Nm (at 1500 rpm) to the front wheels via a DSG container with six shifting. This extra muscle strength is accompanied by a custom suspension. This new geometry lowers the body by 15 mm. Optionally, it is possible to choose active damping, which brings the Polo GTI even closer to the ground by 15 mm. In contrast, the 2020 VW Polo GTI has a mechanical limited slip differential for the front wheels.

2020 VW Polo GTI Specs & Performance

With a 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 s and a top speed of 238 km / h, the 1280 kg heavy requires both hands on the steering wheel. Traction is sometimes lacking on greasy roads. Even when it is dry, the Polo GTI is not immune to skidding wheels. And so far it has come with its small character trait. The reins must be held well during rapid accelerations as if the front wheels each want to go in their own opposite direction, which works up the senses. But without ever putting the driver at risk. The Polo, however, lacks some daring in sporty driving. The engine including above 4400 rpm. The shift paddles behind the wheel are too small to be accessible in all situations. It is, therefore, better to let the DSG Gearbox choose the gears themselves. The purists can comfort themselves by exercising a little patience.

It is comfortable on the long asphalt roads, even without excessive strength with the optional 18-inch wheel rims. The VW Polo GTI shows itself serenely when approaching curves on open roads. His biting brakes and his well-controlled steering allow him to follow a nice rhythm without contradiction. The stable chassis prevents any slip tendency. As long as you do not push him to the limit. There is also the Polo GTI not immune to understeer and hesitation from curves. The Polo prefers to continue to color within the lines.

2020 VW Polo GTI Fuel Economy

Meanwhile, the Polo GTI remains a practical car with its 5 doors, while its wheelbase of 2.55 m offers enough space in the rear. And the suitcase is big enough to make a cozy trip with this car of 4053 mm without any problem. Yes, the fuel Economy will have to be calculated on an average between 7 and 8 l / 100 km if the pace is sometimes higher. And much more than the official 6.1 l / 100 km if we, despite everything, do not worry about the conventions.

The Polo GTI offers from € 27.670 with its 17-inch wheels, fog lamps, and a crash prevention radar with pedestrian recognition, all standard. But at this price, there are no LED lights, nor a digital dashboard. Even no reversing camera or speed controller. For that, the options list must be entered, for € 200, € 400 or even € 900. With regard to the infotainment package with smartphone integration and an 8-inch touch screen (instead of 6.5), even € 1625 needs to be tagged. Without inductive charging, which is included in the Comfort pack (€ 610). In short, for less than € 31,000 (and even € 35,000 for a demanding customer) it will be difficult to find happiness with the Polo GTI.

The 2020 VW Polo GTI is less extraverted than the 2020 Ford Fiesta ST, the Renault Clio RS or the Toyota Yaris GRMN, it is closer to the Peugeot 208 GTi. He wants to distinguish himself above all from the competition through the compromise between comfort and sportsmanship. Fast and precise, the 200 hp, small sedan does not shake the spine thanks to its suspension with controlled stiffness. On the other hand, driving with one hand is forbidden on a heavy foot. Shelf gas departure is almost systematically accompanied by slipping front wheels of this Polo with the size of a Golf III GTI, but with the ability of the Golf V GTI. Fun, for sure, but without playing Fast & Furious.
