2020 VW T-Cross; Small On the Outside & very Spacious Inside

Thursday, July 12th, 2018 - Volkswagen

this is her 2020 VW T-Cross, small and compact SUV from Volkswagen. measuring just 4.1 meters, making it the smallest SUV from Volkswagen.

Volkswagen has the taste with its T-models. After the Touareg, Tiguan, and T-Roc, it is now the turn of the T-Cross. Another size smaller and thus a new competitor for success numbers such as the Renault Captur, Peugeot 2008 and Opel Crossland X. In the vicinity of Munich, we are allowed a block with a prototype of the T-Cross, which will not be on the market until early 2019.

Even though Volkswagen sometimes takes the lead with certain models or techniques, in a number of segments one looks in Wolfsburg the cat very long from the tree. See the Touran, in 2003, long after the Renault (Mégane) Scénic and Opel Zafira came on the market. With the Tiguan, it went the same way in 2007 and also a good offer in the A-segment in the form of the Up took a long time. Then to take over the head position. Because VW will do that again: get on board, but be well-prepared and always end up high in the sales rankings.

Now it is the turn of the T-Cross, a compact SUV based on the Polo. VW has already practiced this in the past, with the Polo Fun (2004) and since 2006 with the CrossPolo, a raised version with roof rails and black plastic mudguards. Something similar does Ford now with the current Fiesta, which got the stamp ‘Active’. The sister model of Seat, the Arona, drives around for a while and Skoda is still coming with the Polar. Some other competitors: Kia Stonic, Hyundai Kona, and Citroën Aircross.

Small on the outside and very spacious inside, with a versatile passenger compartment and unusual technologies for the segment, this is how Volkswagen wants to attack the fastest growing segment in the automobile market, with 2020 VW T-Cross. Its compact SUV, made on the same Polo platform (MQB A0), is only 4.107 m long (only the Ford is shorter), but it is astonished by the space it provides for passengers ‘ legs, especially in the back!

The posterior seat slides in a 15 cm course, making the bag capacity vary between the 385 and the 455 liters, and can reach the 1281 liters with the back of the batted banks (60:40). There will also be the option of the front passenger seatback hitting, allowing the transport of objects about two meters long. A surfboard, for example, in a car facing a young clientele.

Compact crossovers like the Renault Captur have not been dragging for years, but at the Volkswagen Group, you have to look for such cars with a magnifying glass. The seat is the only brand of the group that has a ‘ B-segment ‘ cross-over on the price list with the Arona. Skoda is in the long run with a variation on the Arona theme, a car of which we already got a taste with the Vision X. This year Volkswagen is finally presenting its version of the Arona, the T-Cross. Today, the brand releases the first information about the compact Hoogpotige and sends a series of photographs of packed test specimens into the world. In 2019 the car is at the Dutch dealers.

After the Touareg, Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace and T-Roc the 2020 VW T-Cross is the fifth and directly also the smallest SUV of the Volkswagen. The car measures 4.1 meters in length and is 1.56 meters high. The T-Cross, which is on the same platform as the Polo, is a mere centimeters shorter than the 4.14 meter long Seat Arona. He is also a few millimeters higher than the Spanish counterpart. However, the car is marginally longer and higher than the Polo.

Anyway, the cross-over and SUV are more popular than ever, while the MPV has been on its way for a while. Apparently, we would like to sit a little higher, easier to get in and have a more spacious interior. And that does not only apply to seniors. About those dimensions: the T-Cross is 11 cm higher than the Polo (1.56 m versus 1.45 m), of which 4 cm comes from the increased chassis. The length increased by five centimeters. The trunk also grew, from 351 liters to 385 liters. In all versions, the rear seats are slidable and thus the load space can be increased to 455 liters. If you put the rear seats flat, the load volume is 1.281 liters. We do not yet have precise information about the weight, but we estimate that the T-Cross is about 100 kg heavier than a comparable Polo, with which it is on the level of the larger T-Roc.

Prior to the test drive, we get a short presentation in a closed and well-guarded room. Because inside there is a T-Cross without all those weird stickers, so we get a good impression of how the car will eventually look like. At least not as thick and tough as the first sketches suggested. When it comes to design, Volkswagen is never so exuberant, but you can see that a lot of attention has been paid to each line. It is well thought-out, functional, but anything but frivolous. Those who want to can better move to Citroën for the C3 Aircross, which operates in the same segment. There is indeed an agreement with that car: also the T-Cross is a bit too high for its width. Although that translates into a lot of interior space, it does not look so dynamic. However, Volkswagen has tried with the design of the front and the rear of the car at least optically broader to make, for example, by a black connecting bar between the rear lights and in the nose a wide grille.

2020 VW T-Cross Engine Specs

First a round of driving. We get the version with the 115 hp 1.0 TSI and the seven-speed DSG. We already know this three-cylinder engine from various other models. As mentioned, we drive a prototype, so inside everything is still performed in a weird kind of black plastic, but already in the forms of the production version. You are a lot higher above the asphalt than in a Polo, without feeling like sitting on the chair instead of in it. That is really a mustache. The spatial feeling is also good; the car does more than it really is. And that is how he feels while driving. We can best describe the spring and steering behavior as quiet and accommodating. The T-Cross rolls quietly over the road and in fast corners you notice that you are slightly higher than in the Polo. Above 100 km / h the wind noise occurs at the A-pillars. According to the traveling technician, this is caused by the not yet perfectly finished window and door styles. If we check that on return, that is indeed the case.

All important assistance systems are available or even standard, such as front assist and a lane assistant. The 1.0-liter turbo engine delivers sufficient power and especially torque. For those who want more, there is the four-cylinder 1.5 TSI with 150 hp. VW also delivers the 1.6 TDI, for the form, although an employee warns not to expect too much of that version. The dashboard is broadly similar to that of the Polo and if desired, VW’s virtual cockpit is available. At least as important is the space in the back seat. It is perfectly fine and is reminiscent of that of a Golf Plus. More than enough head and leg room, so. For an additional charge, the back of the passenger seat can be laid flat, so that you can even push a surfboard inside.

We also take a look at the dashboard from the production version and are told that the top is always made of hard material, obviously not shiny. The design is sleek and businesslike, as we are used to from the brand. The T-Cross will be available in the familiar versions: Trendline, Comfortline, Highline and R-Line. In this case, the new, trendy Design-Line has been added. Among other things, it has more color in the interior. From the Comfortline, roof rails are standard, a panorama roof is not available on the European version. The T-Cross will be introduced in the autumn of this year and will be on the market in early 2019. It is going to be a blockbuster. We expect a starting price of around twenty million for the 95 hp 1.0 TSI.
