A 710 horsepower in an off-road vehicle is a world record. For so much power you had to go to the tuner so far. But now fastest Jeep is called 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. We have already driven in the United States.
If this continues today, I am afraid I will have to work out this article in prison. Or that I am being riddled with bullets, because in the dark Detroit suburb we drive through, everyone is undoubtedly in possession of a gun and they will not be charmed by my provocative sprints.
The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, according to its makers, is able to tap the 289 km / h. On the freeways around the city, however, the maximum speed is 113 km/h. That creates an inner struggle. Jeep has the 710 hp compressor V8 that is normally found in the Hellcat versions of the Dodge Challenger and Charger in the Grand Cherokee, or in a kind of mobile apartment building that is not really suitable to drive hard. It therefore seems a sensible undertaking to make a muscle car of such a model. This does not alter the fact that the 4×4 builder did it anyway, because in Russia and the Middle East there are more and more customers who, on principle, take the strongest performance available.
How it is with the transverse dynamics of this car, you can not test in and around Detroit because of the lack of bends. The longitudinal dynamics, however, make you gasp for breath. On a deserted road, we attempt an attempt: we select the track mode, press the launch control button and build up the brake pressure to 1,100 psi. The compressor now closes the bypass valve and builds up a supply of turbo pressure available from idling speed. We floor the accelerator and release the brake pedal. The acceleration? That is bizarre. The 2.4 ton Jeep only needs 3.7 seconds to sprint from 100 km / h from a standstill – this is a bison with the sprint power of a gazelle.
The sound is just as impressive. At the permissible 70 miles per hour he produces a deep rattle, the 6.2-liter V8 then turns around with only 2,000 rpm. This is followed by a heavy blues-rock growl, which turns into a metallic singing at higher revs. Overtaking and inserting actions flow together, the horzion is depressed. The all-wheel drive with the multi-plate clutch (the power distribution on the front and rear axle varies depending on the driving mode from 50:50 to 30:70) ensures that the unusually high mountain torque is guided in the right direction. The Charger and the Challenger can not argue with that.

The steering with its artificial stiffness in combination with a moderate exactness was until now a weak spot of the Grand Cherokee, which was finished in other respects. Does this mean that this Jeep is a good option for daily use? Well, then as a director you have to be willing to make the necessary concessions. Especially when you are quietly driving with traffic, the outlets produce so much noise that it will irritate in the long run. We must also note that we drove a car that had American specifications. Perhaps the European version is less likely to be heard. In addition, the Jeep on the concrete tracks of Michigan with their many unevenness falls in every pit; ‘comfort’ does not occur in his vocabulary.
In order to ensure that the Grand Cherokee does not overheat as quickly as the old-time muscle cars, the following parts have been taken care of: forged pistons and a metal crankshaft, piston pins with an extra hard layer, another crankshaft damper, sodium-cooled exhaust – valves, oil-cooled pistons, a differential with a wider chain, reinforced drive shafts and rear axle, 400 mm large Brembo brake discs with six pistons on the front axle and 350 mm discs with four pistons on the rear axle – and so we can continue for a while. If you want to park this Jeep in the driveway, you should have a very large wallet: in our country, it costs no less than € 238,707. For comparison: in Germany he can go home for € 119,900, in the US you are the hero of the street for $ 85,900. Those who want to break down a bit of money on a fast Jeep can, as always, opt for the SRT (the 8 in the type designation has now been dropped), which thanks to its wonderfully simple atmospheric 6.4-liter engine – may deliver 468 hp.
Is an SUV with 710 hp meaningful? In itself, if you’re hungry for a Challenger Hellcat, but need the transport capacity of a station wagon. We could not test the transverse dynamics on public American roads. And the longitudinal dynamics then blow you away from your socks, but our favorite remains the SRT with its wonderfully old-fashioned atmospheric engine.
